In Remembrance of Wolfgang Schaffer
It is with great sadness that we announce that Wolfgang Schaffer, emeritus Cathedral Master Builder and Architect at Linz Cathedral, passed away on Monday, 8 December 2025, aged 72.

Many of you remember him for the calm, warmth, and professional vision that characterized his work. His fine sense of humor and enthusiasm enriched many encounters and conversations at the annual conferences of the Cathedral Master Builders Association.
Wolfgang Schaffer served as Cathedral Master Builder at Linz Cathedral from 2005 to 2022. During this time, he left his mark on the cathedral with major projects, including the redesign of the sanctuary, the restoration of the tower spire, and the restoration and digitization of the Osterrieder Nativity Scene. He was also responsible for projects such as the Hermitage room, the Celestial Staircase, and the conceptual preparation for the newly constructed Domcenter. His sense of the bigger picture, his respect for the historic fabric, and his openness to new ideas shaped his approach to his work in a remarkable way.
The 2024 Cathedral Master Builders Conference in Linz, held in the context of the cathedral’s 100th anniversary of consecration, was initiated by him, although unfortunately he was unable to attend due to illness. He will be deeply missed for his warmth, his passion for the cathedral, and his youthful spirit.
A requiem in memory of Wolfgang will be held at the St. Mary’s Cathedral Linz on 20 December at 10 a.m. All friends and colleagues who wish to say their farewell are warmly welcome to join us.
